Building and Grounds Specialist





A Building and Grounds Specialist performs a variety of routine and skilled tasks involving maintenance and repair of all MTA facilities, equipment, and grounds.



• Maintains all of MTA facilities, grounds, equipment, and machinery
• Diagnose and repair HVAC, plumbing, and building electrical systems
• Performs scheduled Preventative Maintenance on building mechanical equipment
• Perform all repairs and maintenance on equipment utilized in grounds keeping
• Performs mechanical work and adjustments on all lawn and grounds equipment as needed
• Operates powered equipment, trucks/trailers, mowing, plowing, skid steer operation and use of other powered equipment as needed
• Mows lawns using power or riding mower, trims and edges sidewalks, prunes trees, shrubs, cleaning grounds, and weed control as needed
• Removes facilities snow and ice by shoveling, plowing, and/or salting sidewalks, roadways, parking areas and steps ensuring they are safe for vehicles and people
• Repair and maintain heating systems including boilers
• Repair/maintains overhead doors, operators, gates, and irrigation systems
• Operate cutting torch and ARC, MIG and gas welding
• Perform painting/drywall work on buildings, interior and exterior, fuel tanks, and pipes
• Clean/unplug toilets, floor drains, trench drains, pits, separators as needed
• Replace various types of light bulbs throughout buildings and in parking lots
• Repair and diagnose electrical equipment and control circuits
• Performs electrical work such as replacing breakers, receptacles, switches, transformers and electronic components of machinery and equipment.
• May work at elevations greater than 10 feet while repairing or maintaining building structures. Climbs ladders or steps to reach objects
• Repair and maintain grounds and fences
• Clean, maintain, and repair bus shelters & bus stop signs as assigned
• Use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions/work orders
• Perform other related duties assigned


• Must have experience and knowledge in HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical and Construction methods and materials
• Valid Michigan Driver’s License
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (MTA Trains for CDL)
• Ability to pass criminal and reference checks
• Ability to respond to emergency maintenance requests as required
• Ability to work nights and weekends as needed
• Ability to work independently with little supervision
• Ability to operate various types of equipment, mowers, hand and power tools and testing equipment safely
• Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screen
• Ability to attend work regularly and work under stressful conditions


• Maintain continuous professional attitude, well-groomed appearance and conduct work with positive attitude at all times
• Be aware and operate within OSHA standards and company safety policies at all times.
• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
• Meet standards required by Mass Transportation Authority, including no addiction to alcohol or drugs
• Maintain an excellent driving record
• Wear and maintain authorized MTA uniform
• Be punctual and report for duty in the prescribed manner
• Comply with all MTA rules and regulations and contractual requirements


• Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Must have the ability to perform manual labor in temperature extremes for extended periods of time, tolerate dust, pollen, wind, and rain
• Daily use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
• Reaching with arms and hands
• Walk, climb or balance
• Stoop, kneel or crouch
• Distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 in each eye with or without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 or better with corrective lenses
• Distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green and amber
• Perform duties in outside exposed weather of extreme cold or heat or wet and humid conditions
• Must be able to tolerate some vibration and moderate exposure to mechanical parts
• Must be able to safely fit behind the steering wheel of the standard vehicle operated by MTA
• Must be able to work in high places
• Must be able to work around dust, fumes, and odors
• Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round


• $20.83 per hour
